I'm Steeven Espinoza and my major is Illustration, but I would also like to get my M.B.A in business. I was born in Ecuador, and I'm currently a full-time employee as well, and would love to learn as much as possible from this class.
This portrait is inspired by a Netflix series called "Money Heist" which I highly recommended to watch! The man in this portrait is known as the professor whose role is to guide a group of robbers to rob a National bank in Spain.
Understanding Patriarchy by bell hooks
Page 18, Quote; " When my older brother and I were born with a year separating us in age, patriarchy determined how we would each be regarded by our parents."
In my humble opinion, I agree and disagree with her statement. I personally believe that culture participate a major role in our lives, just as much as patriarchy. Coming from a Latin American family our culture tends to be more strict or may i say "old fashioned" when it comes to a male and females duties and responsibilities. The female tends to usually fall into the household wife role, while the men responsibilities is to provide for his family. I sincerely believe that theres nothing wrong with these two "traditional roles", since at the end of the day they're both equally important and required to carryout a family. However the problem is when society or in this case the author's parents has already put in expectations for both genders, which caused the author to feel frustrated that she cant express or do things that her brother does, or vice versa. But all of this is do because of culture, the way her parents were raised, they wanted to pass down and applied their traditional beliefs and culture into their kids, which in some cases is a good idea and in some others not so much, since now we're talking about a whole new different generation that has a different perspective in how they see the world. In other words, yes the author's parents were in the wrong for trying to force their kids to act or feel certain ways, but we should all remember that her parents come from another era just like her, and her kid's perspective will be different from her as well, probably something that is not normal for her, might be normal for the up coming new generation.
Page 20, Quote; " Then suddenly he snatched me up, broke a board from our screen door, and began to beat me with it, telling me, "You're just a little girl. When I tell you to do something, I mean for you to do it."
Besides the clear view of the violence that is demonstrated on this quote, it seems that the author might've been a bit traumatized with her father's physical aggression, in which I don't blame her. As a person who has witnessed this type of behavior, it hurts to see how a father can destroy his own family just by been consumed by rage and temper. I really do feel sorry for the author, but it helps us understand the author's background, and why she believes the way she does, and the reasons behind for sharing her story.
How Memes Are Making Protest Art More Powerful
Quote; "The photograph's potential as a tool in dismantling the propaganda machine surrounding the Iraq war."
Besides the image being extremely funny, the image showcasing Tony Blair taking a selfie with an explosion on his back was to deliver an awareness to the public on how unnecessary the war was and how it could've been easily avoided. These type of politicians who hold massive power tend to always affect people lives negatively and Tony Blair was no exception. Thanks to the influence of meme and its funny characteristic, it was viewed by many people and Tony Blair was severely criticize for his actions.
Quote; "Recently a meme generator was launched that provides an editable image of trump holding up his <insert text here> executive orders."
Besides it's humor, I think this meme is actually genius, I considered this meme to be sort off like a billboard in which you could write anything and express what you feel while the president of the United States holds it for you. This memes is exclusive because not many people is showcasing an executive order in which you could retype what you pleased, and still have President trump backing up for you.
Memes Are Our Genarition's
Quote; "What shines through- beyond the sense of the play - Is indignation, the amusement of ridiculing powerful figures, and the comfort that comes from collective coping."
I'm able to relate to this quote because as a young adult, I'm always involved with social media, this includes spending a few hours watching several funny memes. However, although memes are a form of entertainment I never expected them to be a form of political communication. I believe this gives many young adults like me a power that could be shared with many other people to communicate real-life problems. The type of meme shown in this article has no boundaries in a person's status or beliefs, therefore making it severe for a person's life and reputation.
Quote; The pure- hearted 11-year-old who Trump appears to be yelling at stand in for everyone who is living through his lies and verbal attacks.
This meme makes me laugh since the image shown in this article could be interpreted in many ways, but what it seems pretty obvious is that it looks like President Trump was yelling at a kid. However, reality could be a whole different story than what it's shown, so a picture may indeed speak louder than a thousand words, but we shouldn't always believe what we see.
