“We all need to be able to have silly thoughts and say stupid things and not feel judged”
I loved this phrase since it talked about how it is okay to make mistakes because it is precisely from mistakes that we learn. When I just arrived in this country and didn't speak any English, my biggest fear was that others would laugh at me if I said something stupid or mispronounced, and one day I realized that he who doesn't risk doesn't win and that if I went to keep my mouth closed all the time for fear that others would laugh, I was never going to learn to defend myself with English.
“We need to practice, mess around, and make mistakes. George Bernard Shaw once said, "A man learns to skate by staggering about and making a fool of himself. Indeed, he progresses in all things by resolutely making a fool of himself”
I chose this quote because I would like to share an experience that I witnessed. Like me, there were many children who had recently arrived in the country who did not know English and the majority were like me, shy and separated from those who did speak English for fear of being made a fool of. However, there was one girl who was the exception, this girl loved being around people who spoke only English and who did not speak her language, she participated in classes even though she was not sure if what she was saying was correct, she laughed at jokes that everyone laughed but that she did not understand, and many times I saw that she was excluded but she tried to include herself to the rest. Over time things changed, and little by little she became more friends with the others since she was having better communication with them, but this was because she was a very open person, she did not care about making a fool of herself, she was herself wherever she went and that made, firstly, her English improve very quickly and secondly, she earned a lot of new friends.
“The poet Jack Gilbert wrote: "We must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world. To make injustice the only measure of our attention is to praise the Devil."
How many times have we gotten angry with life because we believe it is very unfair? Personally, I have done it many times. This phrase is an advice that I will begin to put into practice, and I chose it in case someone did not pay much attention to this while reading the book. We should, despite the bad things, thank God for the good things he gives us.
