"But artistic activism is not only aimed at people’s hearts; it also aims at their minds." pg.171
This quote sparked my interest in the sense of its comparison with art activism, emotion, and the mind. When you think of activism art, I'm sure we don't think about the intertwinement of the emotional impact and the mind stimulation. It brings attention to the idea that in order to facilitate change, one must touch others on an emotional level that gets people's minds busy for a more impactful result.
"... the chance of people changing their minds decreases with age." pg.185
When I read this, it automatically made me think of all the encounters with elderly people. When I thought about it made me laugh because it is literally a job in itself to try to get other people to change their minds. Whether it's on personal views, values, living situations, or anything, it's almost impossible. It also made me think about comfortability, older people are so accustomed to the reality that they are already familiar with, so change scares them.
"We often act on autopilot, making associations and following patterns that have worked for us in the past." pg.195
We often tend to tend to act or do things that seem familiar to us. We're so used to acting on autopilot because it worked for us in the past, we see no reason to change or start anything new. We're afraid it might not work.
Chapter 6, Persuasion, The Art of Activism by Steve Lambert & Steve Lucombe
"But people are also often hard to persuade because they have valid reasons for thinking and acting as they do." pg.211
I agree with this statement. I also believe that people are also hard to persuade because change can be scary. Many people are not fond of the idea of giving up eveything they knew and were familiar with and having to become accustomed to having to learn something or get used to something new.
"The problem is that our minds do not weigh costs and benefits equally." pg.226
As people weigh benefits against the costs, they do so by establishing a comparison level that is often influenced by past experiences. Although, this would be a life-changing opportunity people are always gonna stick with familiarity and what worked before.
"As artistic activists we need to always think of our audience." pg.235
We need to keep in mind in our work as artistic activists who we want our work to touch, impact, and what we want to change,. Without doing so, our work is almost pointless.
