Chapter 5 Cognition and Chapter 6 Persuasion

Quote: “But artistic activism is not only aimed at people's hearts; it also aims at their minds.” PG. 171

It's ironic how a chapter that talks about thinking makes you actually think about thinking. I chose this quote because it makes me think about all the times people have viewed my artwork, and always wondered how it made them feel, but never about their thoughts. This chapter shows us a different perspective that probably many of us would've never thought about, but yet helps us develop a new technique to further connect with our viewers. The ability for an artist to bring attention towards their artwork takes tremendous skill, but the ability to make someone curious and think about a subject sets a higher standard. Most of our lives consist of rushing through the week and getting over it to continue on with the following one, but in creating something that forces someone to stop for a moment and think and try to solve a puzzle, is way more amazing than just to swipe down on an image through Instagram. Although trying to have an emotional connection with a person through your work may be beneficial, the result of bringing curiosity to someone's

mind and possibly a discussion can be more impactful.

Quote: “information only makes sense when linked with other information.” PG 175

I think in order for us to have a deeper connection and understanding with something it falls down to if we can relate to it. Therefore everytime we try to memorize or remember something, it is better to apply it with something else that already exists within our lives. This is why on some occasions local jokes might be funnier for people who live around the area than someone who doesn't belong there. Or why a person with cancer survivors may be more emotionally touched and sympathetic with someone who may be passing through the same situation, and it's because they can relate to them and the struggle that they might have gone through.

Quote: “it's our ability to learn and make snap judgments that have allowed us to survive everything from grasslands to superhighways.” PG 182

Human evolution is fascinating, it's incredible to see how far we have gotten. Unfortunately through our evolution there's been some miss unfortunate events, but within there's been also some positive things that have come along as well. In some cases sometimes it's better to start doing something without worrying too much and explore the outcomes, rather than be stuck and not do nothing.

Quote: “it is very, very difficult to persuade most people to give up their old ways and try something new.” PG. 211

I can personally relate to this quote since I once tried to convince my mom that there's better ways to clean the house effortlessly, however she refused to listen to me and instead she pursued on cleaning it her own way. In some cases people are a bit stubborn, but in some others they simply are used to doing things their own way thinking that that's the best way and only way to do it.

Quote: “ Of course, as artistic activists we are not only concerned with why people think, feel, and do what they do, but in changing what they think, feel, and do.”

PG. 221

Within every artwork I create,I always try to apply a message that may communicate or aspire someone to take action or share the work. An art piece that was done for no reason may not be worth much, but an artwork that touches people's heart and can change someone's perspective may have high value.

Quote: “ As artistic activists, we're interested in influencing people's decisions and actions, but loss aversion makes this harder. PG. 226

Sometimes it may be hard to inspire someone else to do something, but once someone actually accomplishes it, it is worthwhile to put in the time and effort into something. An example of this is when you're trying to help a friend lose weight by eating properly and incrementing exercise. Although that friend may lack encouragement, and self control, the outcome of getting healthier is way better than sticking with the same habit.

Marina Abramović and her performance “Rhythm O” 1974 inspired me the most with her act, therefore I will try to imitate her work but in my own style. Her courage to interact with people and giving them free will to whatever they want with her body has inspired me to eo the same but communicate a different message from hers.
