"Cut Piece" From Yoko Ono

In this project Yoko Ono allowed members of the audience to cut off pieces of her clothing until she was naked. "Cut Piece" was one of the best examples where the visceral presence of the author confronted the tension between exhibitionism and voyeurism, masochism and sadism, between victim and assailant. The piece was lauded as an enactment of women's physical vulnerability in a world where they are reduced to objects for looking at. This groundbreaking artwork is hailed as prophetic of feminist activism and of performance art as a form. Yoko Ono first performed this in Kyoto, Japan in 1964 and later in New York City in 1965.
