This Is What I know about Art - Kimberly Drew Reading Assignment

This Is What I Know About Art

Quote; "This nightmare, one experienced by so many families trying to pay for college, only worsened when I couldn't enroll in classes for the fall semester due to financial holds on my account." PG. 13

Unfortunately for Kimberly Drew and like many other college students are forced to apply for loans due to their limited amount of financial support. When Drew found out that she was no longer eligible to receive financial help from the state, she had no other choice but to take out a private loan in order to continue with her education. Upon accepting the loan it caused severe difficulties for Drew to keep up with her classmates, two of them included limited amount of spare time, and fatigue. This is the story from many  students that constantly struggle to stay up float by being a full time student and employee. As a person who is actively doing both parts is very challenging to keep up with assignments and bills, however nonetheless I personally believe education should be free for everyone or at least very affordable for students who wants to improve themselves.

Quote; " I don't wants to make art for people who can read Fredric Jameson sitting upright on a Mackintosh chair. I want to make art for people who watch The Golden Girls and sit in a big, brown La-Z Boy chair. They're part of my public too, I hope." Gonzales Torres, PG. 32

This quote was well chosen by Kimberly Drew, who wanted to follow Gonzales Torres footprints by wanting to reach out  a variety of people. The quote contributes to her story because just the way she dealt with school and white guilt, she wanted for her work to be seen by people from different background or perspective. Although Art can sometimes be abstract and be interpreted in many ways, it is fair for all public eyes to have the opportunity to see it, and choose for themselves whether they agree or not. Gonzales goal was simply to attract as many views as possibly, in hopes that our difference may bring us together or acknowledge them.

Quote; "There was a point in my career where I feared my anger." PG. 59

Everyone at one point are afraid of something, might be fear of failure or rejection, but fear of anger can sometimes be positive. Anger can mean a variety of things, anger often push us to do something positive or negative. In this case Kimberly Drew uses her anger as a form of strength to push through in school and pursued her career. Her anger of not seeing anyone do anything to change or expose what's wrong with society made her even firm on her believes. At the end Kimberly Drew successfully release her angry towards society, and it was heard by many audience, but this anger was not intended to offend or discriminate someone, but rather help to began a movement.

This image from Kimberly Drew impacted me the most because it shows how corrupted and broken the law has reached. Police brutality is something serious that is in need for change, and unfortunately society voice was heard by an unfortunate death from an African American. Based on the image it seems that a police officer is being punished from his action as if he was an high school student, representing how they should always remember to be cautious and lawful when dealing with citizens who intentions were never to harm someone else.
