Kiara Holmes, Intervention 1: Black Mental Health

 Intervention 1: Black Mental Health

Here is the poster I created.

I placed the poster by the elevators in the Professional Studies Building.

The topic I chose for this intervention is Mental Health in Black College students. Mental health is a very important topic that is rarely talked about in the Black community. Starting college can be exciting in any person's life, but it can also be stressful. You’re on your own, and you’re thrown into a new environment where you may not know anyone or be around anything familiar. You’re now responsible for cleaning your own room, preparing or getting your own food, and getting to all your classes on time. Often people are happy that you're in college, but no one checks in on your mental. For Black or African-American students, the added stress of racism, financial worries, and the pressure to overachieve put them at a higher chance of developing a mental health condition. Failure to manage the symptoms of mental health conditions can affect a student's academic performance and social experience. Therefore, I created a poster that included statistics and tips to help maintain mental health while in college. Posters can be exhibited as stand-alone methods of activism. They can also be used to draw an audience in and encourage them to take part in what's demonstrated. "Social movement scholar Marshall Ganz argues that experiences and feelings of urgency, hope, love, anger, dignity, and solidarity are the core of people's politicization (Duncombe & Lembert, 2021). I wanted to create a project that precisely communicated my research and understanding of Mental Health as it affects the African-American community as a whole.
