Free Textbooks
For many years, students are paying money to do their homework, which in this case are textbooks for their classes. Money is being wasted on required textbooks for class because they are mostly so expensive. It is true that you can rent a textbook and return it afterwards. However, if you buy a textbook just to keep it for yourself, it’s not worth it because books for basic courses for example, may not be as useful in the long term. Students have to pay for school, along with student loans as well, and they might be in a tight budget or do not work at the moment. Students sometimes can’t afford a textbook and he or she will try his or her best to ask other students to share their textbook with them. For example, on the book "The Art of Activism" by Steve Duncombe and Steve Lambert, on chapter 2, page 81, it states "You start up real high, with a great plan, full of confidence, and then, as you seek to bring things to fruition, the inevitable decline begins: you don't have the budget you need, the materials you wanted are not available, it's not looking like you thought it would...until you hit the point where you contemplate quitting". Professors and the school sometimes don’t realize the struggle students are going through outside of school. A students living and financial situation is important to keep an eye on because you never know what they are going through. That’s why in order to ensure that students are doing well in class, providing free textbooks for students is the perfect solution to the problem. Everyone loves free stuff in general. Colleges and universities' should have done this years ago but money hungry is what got them. We always have to pay for the small things nowadays. Not everything is free on college and university, but I want to change that. Providing free textbooks is a good choice because it enhances the quality and relevance of course materials and can improve learning accessibility and alleviates financial stressors. Whether you want a free physical or digital copy of free book, we got you cover. Having free textbooks means having higher completion rates and better grades for students. In the book "The Art of Activism" on chapter 2 on page 75, it states, "When working on a creative project, you can make endless progress toward perfection". You can make your grades with a free textbook in your disposal. Instead wasting money on a bunch of books, use that money for living costs. In order for this to work, I made two signs that can encourage students to participate. It will be hanged on the Visual Arts building on NJCU campus where some students can view it. In addition, it will be posted on the NJCU mobile app in the community section where mostly every student in NJCU can view it as well. Also, there will be a link to a site called client.one pulse.com where students can visit the survey using either their phones or computers and take the survey. The link is only posted on the NJCU mobile app only. The survey will show a few questions into why or why not textbooks should be free. There is also a suggestion on the last question where students can give out suggestions into making textbooks free. Once students are finish taking the survey, they can submit it. The number of submissions will determine the number of votes for providing free textbooks on NJCU. Let’s save our money and make education free!
