Readings for 9/27

 Readings

Chapter 2 of “The Art of Activism, Your All-Purpose Guide to Making the Impossible Possible by Steve Duncombe and Steve Lambert”

“Once you’ve made a habit of showing up for your creative work, don’t expect to make masterpieces.” [pg 57] I think when getting into the arts, people believe that you have to be great at it right off the bat. But, that mindset leads to a negative mindset that burns you out. As this quote states, masterpieces don’t happen automatically. It takes time and effort to practice in order to get your skills and creativity to the point where hopefully you produce a masterpiece one day.

“When we operate solely from our own experiences, interests, perspectives, and comforts, we miss a lot.” [pg 68]

I found myself being a lot like this quote in the past. I agree that Isolation only leaves dead ends or a mundane cycle that is boring to live in. Being able to find/create new experiences and hobbies can teach you a lot about yourself and others. The world is big, and skipping out on it is wasting the endless activities the world has to offer.

“This discomfort is part of growth.” [pg 83]

I chose this quote because of how it works in tandem with the quote above. Stepping into a world outside your comfort zone can feel uncomfortable and wrong. However, it is important to take that step in order to learn about different cultures, histories, experiences, and styles that can improve your art more effectively than observing the world in a bubble.
