“For most of our lives, our mind runs like a personal tabloid television news show in the waiting rooms of our consciousness: giving reports, speculating on events, gossiping, and hyperbolizing our past and future. Our creativity thrives when it can escape the chatter of our mind, or the chatter of other people.”
I’ve never heard a busy mind be described like this, a personal tabloid television news show. I thought it was eye opening as I’ve realized in my own creative journey that I find it difficult to stop the noise from myself and other people. This analogy makes it feel like it’s something that can be managed, rather than something annoying.
“The inventor is always trying to find new ways to solve problems by experimenting without judgment.”
A big part of this quote is the “without judgment” part. Too often do people not try, or give up before they can really get going, in fear of failure and judgment from their peers. Experimentation is the only way to make changes and sometimes it’ll fail, but other times it’ll prevail and the most important part is that “inventors” can make those mistakes without fearing backlash from those around them.
“...the point of progress is progression towards a goal. Among activists and artists there are those who will say “it’s all about the process.” But it’s just as easy to fetishize process as it is to fetishize the product.”
While the process is just as important as the end result, it can be easy to forget that you’re working towards the end result. A majority of the time people won’t see the process but the end product that is being put out there.
Will post responses to second reading when it's posted.
