The first meme made in class depicts the issues of labor exploitation present in the current job market. Most modern jobs on the market either don't pay a liveable wage or underpay for the skillset required. Our generation is doing a lot of work to try to improve working conditions (negotiating better salaries, pushing for a higher minimum wage, advocating for better work-life balance, etc.) but not everyone has the ability to do so.
My second meme is about violence and social stigma around trans people. As a trans non-binary person myself, I'm very passionate and open about my identity, however there's a lot of fear-mongering around trans people being a threat to children, being groomers, "poisoning their minds" or something of the like. This meme depicts the near absurdity of this mindset since trans people are just existing and not forcing anyone to be like them, they're just sharing their life experiences.
Susan Sontag - On Photography
"Photographs really are experience captured, and the camera is the ideal arm of consciousness in its acquisitive mood."
Photography, especially in the modern age, captures moments with as much detail as possible without being there. This quote expresses how powerful photography really is by calling a camera "the ideal arm of consciousness".
"Photographs furnish evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograph of it."
The "pics or it didn't happen" culture of our modern world wasn't a thing when Sontag wrote this piece, and yet she captured it here perfectly. In a social sense, photography is used to share your experiences with others, but is also expected in a way for anyone to fully prove you've done anything.
