Marina Abramović and her performance “Rhythm O” 1974 successfully established a higher standard and shocked many with her fearless act. It is considered to be an inspiration to follow but not to underestimate how Mariana achieved in demonstrating her commitment with her performance, much so to willingly accept her faith of death if it were to happen. It just simply amazes me how much a person can risk to accomplish a project and deliver a message without even stating a single word. Therefore for that reason I have personally tried to imitate her performance by trying something similar, the only difference is that I have limited participants by letting them write on my t-shirt for which they needed to answer my question, “What is one thing you would change about society? Although I may not be giving the same freedom as Marina gave to her participants, I am opening several political, and cultural beliefs that will let people express themselves and engage in a discussion. This experiment has given the opportunity for our community to communicate their concerns and values that for many of them may have been lost, never heard or simply ignored.
There are many forms to communicate a problem that may be triggering our society, the one that Mariana is best known for is her ability to use performance as a tool to express her concerns. Another example that may fall into these types of attributes is nonetheless Jesus himself. As the book “The Art Of Activism” goes on to tell us the many participants who have collaborated in the activism movement, it has also mentioned a few of the first members to be involved in these types of activism performance, in which it all comes down to Jesus of Nazareth. According to the book it states that Jesus was a master when it came down to performing a lesson, “ Jesus, by all accounts, was an adept performer within this common culture. Learning to work within the popular cultural medium is a good lesson for any activist to learn, but what is truly inspiring are the creative ways in which Jesus used, and didn’t use, this medium.” PG. 92 From this passage we are able to relate Marina Abramović performance acts with Jesus since both used the same medium to communicate a message, although their message might’ve been different, their purpose in creating and interacting with the public was to have a deeper connection and open an engagement.
The story undocubus has inspired me, and it may not be considered as a performance art, but it was indeed a movement from immigrants, and I sincerely believe that the message is what defines the project. The book states, “Undocubus activists forged an association between human immigration and a natural and majestic and routinely degraded. PG. 30 The undocubus creates awareness towards everyone who lives in fear of being deported, and creates awakenings to stand up for others. These types of events create huge impacts to society, and inspire others to contribute with their movement, and just as much as Mariana’s performance, the bus, and the people who let their voice be heard, it shows how interacting with one another can signify for better understanding and improvement into their legacy. Therefore by grabbing these examples from many of these inspirational events and applying them into my project, I hope I have given the opportunity to fellow students to express themselves, or at least created a form of connection.
