 CHAPTER 5

1. But artistic activism is not only aimed at people's hearts, it also aims at their minds.pg 171

Certainly, the quote emphasizes the dual impact of artistic activism by acknowledging its power to resonate with people emotionally, touching their hearts, and recognizing its ability to engage their intellect and stimulate critical thinking. Artistic activism goes beyond mere emotional appeal; it seeks to provoke thought, challenge perspectives, and inspire contemplation. Addressing emotional and intellectual dimensions becomes a potent tool for fostering meaningful change and encouraging a deeper understanding of social issues. In essence, it recognizes that to effect lasting change, one must connect with people on an emotional level and engage their rational faculties, fostering a more comprehensive and enduring impact.

2. surprise is our secret weapon. As we have established, the problem with our thinking is that most of the time we're really not thinking much at all. we often act on autopilot, making associations and following patterns that have worked for us in the past. pg195

Surprise becomes our secret weapon when we confront the inherent limitations in our thinking. By acknowledging that much of our decision-making operates on autopilot, we can disrupt established patterns and challenge conventional associations. Embracing surprise injects fresh perspectives into our thought processes, prompting us to break free from the confines of habitual thinking and explore new possibilities

3. storytelling tactics are powerful and effective tools for artistic activists, but we need to go further. if we really want to bring about revolutions in thinking and being we need to disrupt the stories people already have and help to write new ones. pg 194

Storytelling is a potent tool in the arsenal of artistic activists, but the true power lies in going beyond mere narration. To usher in revolutions in thought and existence, we must disrupt the existing narratives that shape people's perspectives and actively participate in crafting new, transformative stories. It's not just about telling tales; it's about rewriting the narratives that define our understanding and paving the way for innovative, progressive thinking.

CHAPTER 6

1. we can learn the most from a type of marketing called social marketing. its function is not to sell products, but to change social behaviors in often positive ways, promoting initiatives like public health. pg 212

Social marketing stands out as a unique teacher in the marketing realm. Unlike traditional approaches focused on selling products, its purpose extends to shaping and transforming social behaviors for the better. By promoting initiatives like public health, social marketing not only imparts valuable insights but also demonstrates the influential role marketing can play in fostering positive societal change.

2. Mapping the benefits and costs of the course of action we want to promote allows us to hone our message and create a range of pieces to emphasize different points. pg223

In the realm of art activism, strategic planning becomes a crucial step in conveying our message effectively. By meticulously mapping the benefits and costs of the advocated course of action, we gain insights that enable us to craft a nuanced and impactful narrative. This approach empowers us to create a diverse array of artistic pieces, each emphasizing different facets of our message, ensuring a comprehensive and resonant engagement with our audience.

3. the reasoning is both moral and strategic: if we want to change society, we really do need to reach everyone. But let's be realistic, this is logistically impossible. trying to reach everyone is neither an efficient use of resources nor would it be effective. pg235

The call to reach everyone for societal change is both a moral imperative and a strategic consideration. However, the pragmatism of the situation cannot be ignored. Logistically, attempting to reach every individual may prove inefficient and ineffectual, demanding resources that could be better allocated. Striking a balance between ambition and realism is essential to maximize the impact of efforts aimed at transforming society.
