Kimberly Drew "This Is What I Know About Art"

"As time went on, I also realized that I didn't get many opportunities to learn about the artists and movements that got me interested in art in the first place. There have been Black people since the beginning of time, but I was not seeing any of their art in any of my classes. How would I find more artists like Basquiat, Hancock, Simpson, or Ligon?"

I feel like this quote is the beginning of Kimberly Drew's journey. She realizes that she doesn't see what she wants in her classes now, and decides to change that. It's so empowering how she fights for the change and doesn't stop until she gets what she wants, because she knows herself and others deserve to see more diversity in the art world.

"I did not want Black art to be a negligible factor. I did not want Black art to be exterminated. I saw it happening in my art history classes, and I just had to do something to build a history online."

She saw an issue, and she worked to fix it. She set her mind to something and was able to make a difference. She is inspiring in the way she keeps persisting, despite the hardships she might encounter with having the blog (ie. being calling into the directors office.)

"My story is also about generosity. It's about the things that artists and friends teach us and how we employ them in our own lives."

She constantly reiterates how important it is to have a sense of community and this quote really drives that point home. Her story is about anger, but also the kindness that she's shared with those who share the same goals as her.

This piece stuck out to me because of the contrast in the colors. It's cold, with a hint of warmness behind the line and in the upper left corner. I like how it seems to be on fire, adding another layer of depth to the 2D piece.
