Intervention Project
For my Intervention, I chose to highlight one of the negatives college students face which is loneliness. Most people come with the thought that college life is very interactive and friendly; for some this is true, but for many others this is false. Someone who struggles to be social may face loneliness that can develop into many other things. This issue is something I think many college students may meet and it can be detrimental because the lack of acknowledgment, positive messages being received and stress can create low self-esteem. This issue negatively affects a college student's mental health. Sometimes all someone is looking for is for someone to acknowledge them. Being told positive and encouraging affirmations can not only brighten someone's day but also week as their hard work is being recognized and valued.
My message regarding this issue would be to promote a friendly, more interactive, and encouraging environment on campus. With this message, I plan to combat the feeling of loneliness and lack of affirmation from others. This will spread positively and allow readers to feel a sense of acknowledgment. This will be targeted at college students on the NJCU campus in hopes of uplifting those feeling undervalued, invisible, neglected, and so on. As a college student myself sometimes I feel my contributions and hard work is going unnoticed. This is one thing I know other college students can relate to and sometimes an affirmation such as “I’m proud of you” is something we are looking for among peers. When someone has struggled to make friends and is only relying on themselves to keep their spirits high it can be tiring.
My tactic to communicate this message is to pass out mini flyer cards that include positive, encouraging, and heart-felt affirmations on them. Another tactic would be instead of handing them out to leave a sign somewhere on campus that reads take which will have a stack of cards under allowing for anyone passing by to grab a card. Either tactic will allow for me to get the message across and hopefully make someone's day. My tactic to engage my audience will be to have something on the bottom or back of the card stating “If this motivated you, or made you happy pass it on to someone else and share the positively”. This will allow for a bigger engagement of students as my card may encourage them to interact with someone else they don’t know or someone they know who can use the message.
